Accidental Exposure First Aid Procedure

BENEFITS

Employers have a duty to protect workers from illnesses and diseases, ranging from influenza to black lung disease to Ebola. Although healthcare workers are most at risk of exposure to infectious diseases, other workers may also be at risk. For example, workers trained to provide first aid to co-workers can be exposed to infectious diseases spread by blood, vomit or other bodily fluids. Even workers who clean up the scene of a safety incident could accidentally be exposed to blood and thus at risk.

HOW TO USE THE TOOL

Adapt this model accidental exposure first aid plan for your workplace and the requirements in your jurisdiction’s OHS regulations. Ensure that workers designated as “first aid attendants” or “first aiders” and others at risk of accidental exposure to infectious illnesses are trained on this plan.
