Posting of OHS Information in the Workplace – Know The Laws Of Your Province

Which health and safety information must you post at your workplace?

OHS laws require employers to post certain kinds of key health and safety information in the workplace in a conspicuous location where all workers can see it. If and when OHS inspectors ever come to your site, chances are that compliance with posting requirements will be one of the first things they check. And while failure to post is deemed a relatively minor violation, if mandatory materials aren’t properly displayed, it sends up a red flag that may cause an OHS investigator to question your commitment to compliance and intensify the investigation in search of more serious violations.

Complying with posting rules is tricky because the requirements are typically contained in a number of different regulations, including those under both the OHS and workers comp act. Posting is an especially big headache if you operate in different parts of the country because posting requirements vary significantly by jurisdiction. To make life easier, here’s a chart listing the key OHS and workers comp requirements of each jurisdiction. As you can see, Ontario has the most extensive posting requirements, followed by BC, Nova Scotia and Manitoba; by contrast, Alberta and Yukon require the fewest postings.

Clarification & Caveat

OHS laws of some provinces authorize OHS investigators and/or JHSC members to post certain items at an employer’s worksite. Except where indicated otherwise, this chart lists only the items that employers are required to post. To maximize its usability for the widest range of employers, the chart also omits the special posting requirements that pertain to blasting, mining and diving sites. So, those of you involved in those kinds of operations will need to supplement this chart by checking the blasting, mining and diving sections of your province’s OHS regulations.

Go to the OHS Insider website for a more complete analysis of posting requirements and a 6-step game plan to ensure compliance with them.
