Mine Fined $350,000 after Worker Is Run Over & Killed by Scoop Tram

A worker operating a scoop tram in a mine drove away to get a piece of equipment. While he was gone, a worker began laying electrical wire in the tram’s work zone. When the tram operator returned, he was unaware of that worker’s presence in the zone. The tram ran over and killed the worker. The MOL found that the mine’s procedure for alerting equipment operators of workers in their area wasn’t applicable where the incident occurred. The mine pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that there was a safety procedure in place in the area of the incident to protect workers when mobile equipment was being used; workers were instructed on such a procedure; and the procedure was implemented through appropriate supervision. The court fined it $350,000 [Goldcorp Canada Ltd., Govt. News Release, Oct. 11, 2012].
