On July 6, 2013, a train carrying 7.7 million litres of crude oil travelling at 104 km/hour derailed in the small Qubec town of Lac-Mgantic, killing 47 and causing a number of fires and explosions. Now Irving Oil has been ordered to pay $4 million in fines after pleading guilty to 34 Transportation of Dangerous Goods Acts violations in connection with the incident, including failure to classify the oil as a dangerous good or adequately train its workers in TDGA safety rules.
