Fishing Boat Incident Results in OHS Charges

While the vessel MV Aqviq was tied up at a wharf, some frozen product fell as it was being lifted from the hold and hit a worker in the head, causing serious injuries. The employer was charged with violating the OHS Act and regulations by failing to provide a safe workplace; ensure that safe work procedures were followed; provide instruction and supervision and ensure head protection was worn. It was also charged with failing to notify the Occupational Health and Safety Division when the incident occurred [Harbour International Ltd., Govt. News Release, July 24, 2013].
