Department and City Fined $60,000 Each for Engineer’s Death

A Transportation Department engineer was struck and killed by a vehicle while inspecting asphalt repairs. Two city workers and an Irving Oil employee were injured in the incident. Irving Oil pleaded guilty to three charges related to the incident and was fined $13,000. The city and department decided to go to trial. In Dec. 2014, they were convicted of seven safety violations for failing to appreciate the hazards and to ensure the workers had taken all reasonable care. The court just fined each $60,000 [NL Transportation Department and the City of St. John’s, Feb. 27, 2015.
