Death of Young Worker in Fall Results in $90,000 Fine

Workers for a subcontractor were performing masonry work at a construction project. A young worker was on the 12th storey, helping in the delivery of concrete blocks to the roof. Workers were moving a skid of blocks when the skid suddenly propelled toward an exterior parapet wall that surrounded the roof top. The skid crashed through this wall, knocking the worker from the roof top. He fell four storeys to a powered scaffold. He later died from his injuries. Although the worker was trained in fall protection, he wasn’t using any form of fall protection at the time of the incident. And the parapet wall didn’t constitute a guardrail. The subcontractor pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that a fall restricting system was used where a guardrail system wasn’t reasonably possible and was fined $90,000 [Central Construction, Govt. News Release, March 20, 2015].
