Worker’s Leg Gets Trapped & Broken, Costing Employer $55,000

A worker for a manufacturer was assigned to pick up empty aerosol cans from a skid. While he was doing so, a co-worker operating a forklift brought another skid into the area. As the co-worker put the skid down, the first skid was pushed forward, trapping the worker’s leg between the skid and a conveyor and fracturing it. The manufacturer pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that barriers, warning signs or other safeguards for the protection of workers in an area were used where vehicle or pedestrian traffic may endanger their safety. The court fined it $55,000 [1736665 Ontario Inc., Govt. News Release, March 28, 2013].
