Inmates Should Be in Secure Area When Self-Injecting Insulin

A corrections officer initiated a work refusal on the grounds that it was unsafe being present when inmates used insulin pens, which are needles, to self-administer insulin in a hallway. An OHS officer investigated the refusal and order the facility to implement a procedure in which inmates were placed in a secure area when self-administering insulin. The facility appealed and the Director overturned the order. So the corrections officer appealed. The Labour Board reinstated the order, ruling that the facility hadn’t take every reasonable precaution as to the safe administration of insulin by inmates [Appellant v. Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, [2013] NSLB 81 (CanLII), July 22, 2013].
