Company Penalized $30,000 for Depositing Mining Effluent into Lake

A company failed to notify an inspector of having deposited effluent into fish-bearing water, namely Luce Lake, without authorization. Specifically, the company failed to comply with a limit on the concentration of total suspended solids in effluent entering water frequented by fish. It also failed to provide a written report to an inspector within 30 days of the unauthorized release. As a result, the company pleaded guilty to violating the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act. The court fined it $15,000 and ordered it to pay $15,000 to the federal Environmental Damages Fund [The Iron Ore Company of Canada, Govt. News Release, June 17, 2015].
