Chinese Company Loses Last Shot at Appeal in OHS Case

The Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that says a Chinese state-owned corporation should face 53 OHS charges in the deaths of two oilsands workers. The company, which brought the workers to Alberta, had argued it had no official presence in Canada and so couldn’t be charged. The Supreme Court gave no reasons for its decision [Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Co. v. Alberta, [2012] S.C.C.A No. 31, July 12, 2012].
