BC coal mining Teck Coal was on the receiving end of the highest fine ever handed out in Canada for a fisheries violation, $60 million, after pleading guilty to 2 charges of depositing substances deleterious to a fish habitat (calcite and selenium) in violation of the federal Fisheries Act. The firm has admitted its wrongdoing and is implementing a quality improvement and calcite deposit plan in the Elk Valley where the offences occurred. In 2017, Teck Coal was fined $1.425 million for 3 other Fisheries Act violations [Teck Coal, March 25, 2021].
