Worker’s Fall from a Scissor Lift Costs Employer $75,000

A worker was working on a plane engine using a scissor lift. He fell about five feet to the concrete floor below, suffering a head injury, broken bones, a dislocation and scrapes. The MOL determined that the worker fell because the end gate of the scissor lift was held open by plastic ties and the latch was taped over. It also determined that the worker didn’t carry out the required daily check on the lift before using it. The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that equipment, materials and protective devices were maintained in good condition at the workplace and was fined $75,000 [Bombardier Inc., Govt. News Release, Dec. 15, 2014].
