Recycling Company & Director Fined $40,000 for Exporting Hazardous Materials

Environment Canada enforcement officers inspected two containers that were returned to Canada from Hong Kong. The containers contained hazardous materials, including lead acid batteries and used nickel-cadmium batteries. The recycling company that owned the containers didn’t have permits for the transit or export of hazardous recyclable materials. The company and a director pleaded guilty to exporting hazardous recyclable material without prior notification and exporting without a permit. The court fined the company $29,000 and the director $11,000 [Electronics Recycling Canada and Sai Feng Guan, Govt. News Release, June 5, 2015].
