Pinning of Mine Worker by Haulage Car Results in $100,000 Fine

Mine workers were loading haulage cars using a diesel scoop tram. The haulage cars were returning to the work area where two workers were preparing oversized ore chunks for a blast and a third worker was next to the scoop tram. As the haulage cars approached the crew, a worker realized the cars weren’t stopping. He tried to pull the worker standing by the tram away but that worker was hit by the haulage cars and pinned between a car and the tram. The worker suffered cuts and a broken bone. The mine pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that the operator of a vehicle had a clear view of the path of travel and was fined $100,000 [Goldcorp Canada Ltd., Govt. News Release, July 22, 2015].
