PERC Violations Result in $36,000 Fine for Dry Cleaner

A dry cleaner pleaded guilty to violating the Tetrachloroethylene (Use in Dry Cleaning and Reporting Requirements) Regulations under the federal CEPA, 1999. The charges were the result of an inspection of the business by Environment and Climate Change Canada enforcement officers. It was fined $36,000 for the improper storage and disposal of tetrachloroethylene, a toxic substance, commonly known as PERC. The court also ordered the company to publish an article in a dry cleaning trade magazine, advising the industry on proper handling of tetrachloroethylene waste [Texmain Cleaners Ltd., Govt.
