Lack of Written Procedure for Removing Large Tires Results in $55,000 Fine

At a mining company’s underground maintenance garage, a mechanic was replacing a rear oscillating axle on a scoop tram. While removing the right rear tire, it fell on him. Three co-workers lifted the 878-pound tire off the injured mechanic, who was taken to the hospital for treatment. The MOL determined that the company didn’t have a written procedure for the work being performed on the tires and wheel assembly as required by the Mining and Mining Plants Regulation. The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that it established written procedures for the work performed on the tires and wheel assembly and was fined $55,000 [Goldcorp Canada Ltd., Govt.
