Injured Worker Not Entitled to Additional Safety Officer Training

A worker suffered a serious shoulder injury on the job. Because he had some experience as a safety officer, he requested training as a construction safety officer as part of his return to work (RTW) plan. The WCB helped him take a six-week safety officer course that was required for such work in the construction industry. But the worker wanted more training. The Appeals Commission denied his request. The WCB will usually sponsor only one overall training plan as part of a worker’s RTW rehabilitation from an injury. There was no evidence that the worker needed additional training or certification to be employed as a safety officer [Docket No: 2012-579, [2012] CanLII 38973 (AB WCAC), June 27, 2012].
