We have had this discussion in our workplace – should another coworker be allowed to drive an injured coworker to the hospital’ What is the company’s liability in this case’ When should an ambulance be called instead?

The answer may depend on jurisdiction. Can you please tell me which province you’re in, or if you’re federally regulated so I can look up the OHS regulations and applicable guidelines’ Thanks.

We are not federally regulated, and we are located in Ontario

The employer’s duty is to provide or arrange for the providing the injured worker immediate transportation to a hospital, doctor’s office or worker’s home. The vehicle used must have all of the required first aid equipment. If a co-worker’s vehicle does have the necessary equipment, it’s probably okay for the co-worker to take the victim to the hospital. If not, you need to call an ambulance or other properly equipped transport provider.
Caveat: This is my interpretation of the Ontario WSIB rules. Unfortunately, Ontario is pretty lousy on guidance, especially as compared to other provinces. The scant guidelines the WSIB has issued don’t address this situation at all. Hope this helps. Glenn

There are other issues that could come up when using a personal vehicle to transport an injured co-worker to a hospital or for medical attention. Make sure that you can use your private vehicle for this purpose with your insurance provider. in case of an accident resulting in further injury to the already injured worker. I do use my private vehicle for this purposes, and I pay

That should read, and I pay for the extra insurance coverage (Nine dollars a month).
