Charges Against One Company in Fatality on Fishing Vessel Dropped

On a fishing vessel, a worker died after being hit by a steel door that opened up to a chute used to transfer shrimp. The TSB found that another crew member who was inspecting the ship’s holding tanks accidentally activated a hydraulic lever, causing the shutter door to close instantly on the victim. The Crown laid eight charges against two companies’Ocean Choice International and Katsheshuk Fisheries’including failing as an employer to provide a safe workplace along with training and supervision. But the Crown just dropped the charges against Ocean Choice, saying it wasn’t the ‘proper corporate entity.’ The case against the other company has been set over until March [Ocean Choice International, The Canadian Press, Feb. 17, 2014].
