Asbestos-Related Violations Cost Employer $25,000

An employer was redeveloping a property that was clad in tiles containing asbestos. More tiles were stored in the basement. So the building required asbestos abatement and disposal. The employer hired a worker to remove the siding and tiles. The worker lived on-site while performing the work. Although the employer contacted the MOL about the OHS requirements relating to asbestos, he failed to follow through with the necessary equipment and precautions. For example, he didn’t give the worker any asbestos training or proper PPE. The employer pleaded guilty to failing as an employer to ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by law were carried out and was fined $25,000 [Kevin Kauffman, Govt. News Release, Aug. 30, 2013].
