What are the rules or requirements around providing Naloxone kits in the workplace’ We are a construction company in Alberta.

That’s a great Q! As in other jurisdictions, Alberta requires employers to keep particular first aid supplies and facilities for workplace emergencies based on the number of workers, hazardous nature of the work and proximity to hospitals and fixed health care facilities. Naloxone is NOT one of the supplies specified in those first aid regs. I’m pretty sure that’s the same in all parts of the country although I haven’t specifically checked. And I don’t know of any other law that specifically requires employers to keep Naloxone in the workplace.

In sum, keeping Naloxone at workplace is not currently a legal obligation–except, of course, at specific kinds of facilities like health care treatment sites. Of course, OHS regs. are minimum standards and having Naloxone on site may be advisable even if it’s not required, especially at workplaces where potential opioid drug problems exist. Hope that helps. And thanks for planting an idea for a future OHSI story. Glenn
