Forklift Mounted Platform Safety – Game Plan
Forklifts are traditionally made for lifting materials, not people. Yet, in some circumstances, workers are raised to elevated locations using platforms attached to forklifts. To do this safely and legally, companies must follow specific regulations and guidelines. Not doing so can lead to serious consequences, like the Saskatchewan company fined $24,000 due to a worker’s injuries.
Forklifts are traditionally made for lifting materials, not people. Yet, in some circumstances, workers are raised to elevated locations using platforms attached to forklifts. To do this safely and legally, companies must follow specific regulations and guidelines. Not doing so can lead to serious consequences, like the Saskatchewan company fined $24,000 due to a worker’s injuries.
1. Required Standards for Forklift Mounted Platforms: Forklift mounted platform operations aren’t something you can freelance. The common risk is that workers will hop onto a plain old wooden skid used to lift materials and ask a nearby forklift driver for a “lift.”
2. Forklift Mounting Platforms Markings: Many jurisdictions require that specific safety information be legibly and permanently marked in a conspicuous place on an elevated work platform.
3. Safe Work Procedures for Forklift Mounted Platforms: Because of their hazards, forklift mounted platforms should be used only when ladders, scaffolds, other elevating work platforms and safer alternatives and equipment aren’t available.
