Combustible Dusts Housekeeping Log Template

Dust fires and explosions like the one that killed 26 workers at the Westray Mine in 1992 are a significant risk for many industries, including food processing, agriculture, wood products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and metal fabrication. If any Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) officers perform safety inspections or combustible dust incident investigations at your workplace, one of the first things they'll ask you for is documentation demonstrating that you actively manage dust hazards at your site. Among the records you should be able to produce in response to such a request is a housekeeping log documenting that you:

  • Monitor dust accumulation regularly.
  • Clean hazardous areas and correct potential problems promptly.
  • Assign responsibility for dust control.
  • Monitor and verify compliance with your combustible dust housekeeping protocols.

Here's a Combustible Dust Housekeeping Log Template. While based on OHS requirements and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, you can adapt the Template based on the operations you perform, the combustible materials you use, and the physical configuration of your workplace. Retain and review your Housekeeping Logs along with:

  • Combustible dust hazard assessment records.
  • Inspection and maintenance records.
  • Worker training documentation.
  • Incident reports.
