Noise Hazards – 2023 Year in Review

ALBERTA

Dec 9: Alberta is reducing the threshold for when employers must perform a workplace noise exposure assessment from 85 decibels (dBA) to 82 dBA, effective March 31. The assessment must also meet the updated version of the CSA standard, CSA Z107.56-18, Measurement of Noise Exposure. There are also technical changes affecting noise dosimetry readings in performing the assessment.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Feb 8: WorkSafeBC’s Board of Directors approved changes to bring workers comp coverage rules for non-traumatic hearing loss into line with current scientific and medical knowledge and standards.

QUÉBEC

Jun 16: New OHS regulations reduce the occupational daily exposure level to hazardous noise on construction sites to 85 dBA for 8 hours of work. CNESST issued new guidance to help employers protect workers from exposure to excessive noise levels in the workplace and complying with the strict new OELs.
