Electrical Safety – 2023 Year in Review

FEDERAL

May 18: ESDC published a new Hazard Alert to help employers protect workers against risks of electrocution, shock and other electrical injuries. The risks are particularly great at telecommunication sites where operations are carried out on or near energized power lines.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Mar 1: Revised minimum safe approach distances to exposed electrical equipment and conductors under (Section 19.24.1 of) the OHS Regulations took effect today.

Apr 6: WorkSafeBC issued revised guidelines on section 19.27(1)(b) of the OHS Regulations, which allows for specially trained workers to follow revised limits of approach to energized equipment in situations where rerouting, de-energizing, or guarding the equipment isn’t practicable. The guidelines explain when such situations would be considered to exist.

ONTARIO

Dec 1: The MOL issued a new hazard alert warning health care facilities that fires can occur when the contents of IV bags get into electrical outlets. The risk is likely to occur when IV bags that are hung near outlets develop leaks allowing the fluid to drip out.
