Emergency Response

Sep 13: Newfoundland will award one-time honoraria of $500 to volunteer firefighters and ground search and rescue members and $10,000 to local fire departments and ground search and rescue teams who deployed volunteers supporting wildfire response. These initiatives build on previous supports, including $100,000 for wildland coveralls to volunteer fire departments involved in wildfire suppression efforts.

Industry Challenges

Sep 22: Newly tabled Bill C-237 amends the federal Fisheries Act governing the management of Atlantic groundfish fisheries, provides for harmonizing the close times across the Maritimes provinces of Canadian fisheries waters of the Atlantic Ocean used for recreational fishing of groundfish.

New Laws

Sep 15: Newfoundland announced its first grant under the new Job Accelerator and Growth (JAG) Program—$1.4 million to IT consultant CGI to support the company’s expansion into the province, which is expected to result in the creation of up to 60 new jobs over the next 3 years. Under Program rules, new JAG jobs must average at least $50,000 in salary.

Transportation Safety

Oct 9: Newfoundland advised the public of a fraudulent text message circulating in the province asking for money and personal information regarding payment of speed camera tickets. The advisory stresses that speed camera tickets and information about how to pay them is delivered via registered mail and never through text messages. Instructions to recipients: Don’t click on the provided link, delete the message, block the phone number and consider reporting the message to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or local police.

Infectious Illness

Oct 20: October 20th is when vaccination clinics in the province will begin providing influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. Both vaccines will be offered to residents 6 months of age and older and can be safely taken at the same time. But appointments must be booked in advance.
