LAWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Work Injuries

Apr 21: A week before the National Day of Mourning, the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) revealed that there were nine work-related deaths in Prince Edward Island (PEI) in 2025, including both acute and chronic fatalities.

Transportation Safety

May 31 is the deadline for PEI drivers to remove studded tires from their vehicles this year. Studded tires are only permitted between October 1 and May 31 and drivers who use them off season face fines of at least $150.

Training

Apr 24: The new Canada–Prince Edward Island Workforce Tariff Response program will invest $3.1 million over the next three years to support workers in softwood lumber, steel, and other industry sectors affected by tariffs. The money will enable over 350 PEI workers to build new skills.

New Laws

Apr 14: The new PEI budget allocates $26 million for a new Island Essentials Benefit to help low- and middle-income residents offset the cost of essential household expenses. It also provides for $3.2 million in personal income tax reductions through increases to the basic personal exemption.

Infectious Illness

Apr 29: PEI reports that Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) hospitalizations among infants and seniors have declined by 93% and 52%, respectively, since the province expanded its RSV protection program last year. The RSV program began in fall 2024, offering vaccines to residents of long-term and community care homes. In fall 2025, it expanded to include infants and seniors 75+ living independently.

Infectious Illness

Apr 8: If and when newly tabled Bill 106 passes, PEI employers will no longer be allowed to require employees to provide a certificate signed by a medical practitioner certifying that they are or were unable to work due to illness or injury for purposes of verifying eligibility for sick leave under the Employment Standards Act.

Action Point: Find out how to use the OHS Insider Infection Exposure Control Plan template to prevent RSV measles, COVID, and other infectious illness outbreaks at your workplace.

Workplace Violence

Apr 8: Bill 104, the Disclosure to Protect Against Intimate Partner Violence Act, which has been reported out of Committee, enables persons who are at potential risk of domestic violence to obtain personal information about their intimate partner to protect their own safety, such as whether the partner has a history of domestic violence.

Action Point: Find out how to implement an effective domestic violence prevention and response policy at your workplace.
