What if, despite taking all reasonable precautions to prevent an infection, you get that call ‘ you have a COVID case! A worker is suddenly ill at work with all of the symptoms and indicators of COVID-19. Or the worker calls (or worse, a series of workers call), saying they are ill with those known key symptoms. Based on their experience to date, available legislation, and public health guidance, Cheryl and Jeremy will lay out a step-by-step analysis and process for any report of a workplace COVID-19 case.

About the Speaker

Cheryl is a senior partner in our national Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workers’ Compensation practice. A former Ontario OHS Prosecutor, Cheryl has over 30 years of experience in advising on strategic and practical approaches for management of workplace safety issues including the complexities of OHS due diligence, contractor management, accident response strategies, and discipline for safety matters. She frequently advises on national and federal OHS programs. She has defended and represented Canadian employers, constructors, senior management, and supervisors in some of the most serious and complex health and safety trials, complaints, inquests and appeals. She provides hard hitting and practical OHS training on due diligence, contractor management and other topics to management and supervisors.

Jeremy is a labour and employment lawyer specializing in occupational health and safety law. As a former health and safety prosecutor, Jeremy has detailed and special expertise in occupational health and safety and other regulatory matters. He advises and represents organizations and their management in all sectors. Jeremy provides proactive and strategic advice following serious workplace incidents, during regulatory inspections (including in challenging orders and directions), with respect to work refusals, and on other sensitive health and safety issues. In addition, Jeremy is a very experienced and successful advocate who has conducted numerous trials, appeals and hearings before every level of court in Ontario and before boards of arbitration, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, Occupational Health and Safety Tribunal Canada, and Coroner’s Inquests.
