Worker Injured in Fall Through Open Hatch in Floor

A company was hired to dismantle and remove assets from a former mill. A worker was on the third floor of the mill, removing equipment by pushing it through an open hatchway to the floor below to be taken away. While pushing a large metal cabinet weighing approximately 150 pounds, the worker’s glove got caught in the cabinet and he was pulled over the edge of the hatchway, falling about 5.84 metres (19 feet). He suffered numerous fractures. The company pleaded guilty to failing to provide fall protection and was fined $55,000 [Global Recycling & Recovery, Govt. News Release, Sept. 16, 2015].
