Respirator Safety Training Checklist

Employers that require workers to use respirators must provide effective safety training before the worker’s initial use of the equipment. Use this Checklist to determine if you comply with OHS requirements and remain in compliance going forward.

 

CHECKLIST FOR RESPIRATOR SAFETY TRAINING

û Check to make sure that your facility provides respirator safety training and requires workers who receive training to demonstrate knowledge of:

[ ] Why the respirator is necessary.
[ ] The consequences of improper fit, use or maintenance.
[ ] The limitations and capabilities of the respirator.
[ ] How to effectively use the respirator in emergency situations, including in the event of respirator malfunction.
[ ] How to inspect, put on, remove, use and check the seals of the respirator.
[ ] Maintenance and storage procedures.
[ ] How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent effective use of the respirator.

û Check that your facility meets OHS respirator training requirements by providing the following:

[ ] Training that is understandable to employees.
[ ] Training prior to employee use of a respirator.
[ ] Retraining as specified below:
_____[ ] Annually.
_____[ ] Upon changes in workplace conditions that affect respirator use.
_____[ ] When knowledge and skills for respirator use are not retained by the employee.
