Ontario: Fall Protection
Posted On April 17, 2019
March 7: The MOL proposed a series of regulatory changes to OHS requirements for temporary stairs at construction projects:
- Clarify that measurements for determining if temporary stairs must be installed start from lowest level, including basement and underground levels
- New exemption saying stairs not required where formwork or falsework is erected to a suspended slab (current exemption applies only to parts of buildings with only steel beams or columns erected or where there’s a permanent ladder attached to a structure before it’s raised into position)
- Increase in minimum width of a staircase to 610 millimetres “where reasonably possible,” and 500 millimetres in all other cases.
