Poll Results Suggest that JHSCs Aren’t Very Effective

Most Canadian workplaces have a joint health and safety committee (JHSC), which plays a key role in maintaining workplace health and safety and compliance with the OHS laws. But to do so, the JHSC must be effective and an active participant in the company’s OHS program.

In a recent poll, we asked you how effective your JHSC was’and the results aren’t encouraging:

  • 28% said the JHSC was somewhat effective, while another 28% said it wasn’t effective at all
  • Just 20% said the JHSC was very effective
  • 8% said they didn’t know
  • A very troubling 16% said, ‘What JHSC” (in general, workplaces with 20 or more employees require a JHSC or at least a health and safety representative).
