Do You Ever Have to Deal with Difficult People at Work?
Unless you’re a hermit, it’s likely that you work with or encounter other people on the job. Some people are easy to work with, while other are more challenging. And even the most laid back people can become difficult under certain circumstances.
Safety and HR professionals are faced with challenging people and situations more than most. Effectively dealing with such situations, such as emotionally distraught workers, aggressive behaviour (physical or verbal), and lying, misleading or evasive staff members, can be critical to diffusing potentially dangerous circumstances.
For instance, disciplining a worker with a violent temper can have tragic consequences if it’s not handling properly. Example: A worker at a California office complex killed two people (and himself) and injured two others in his company. His possible motive: a supervisor had just reprimanded him for missing a deadline.
