Asbestos Violations Cost Construction Company $13,000

The OHS Branch investigated the demolition of a former hospital. As a result of its findings, the construction company pleaded guilty to failing to take all necessary measures to ensure that workers’ exposure to airborne asbestos was reduced to the lowest practical level and that appropriate measures were taken to prevent pollution of the general environment by asbestos dust released from the workplace. The court fined the company $10,000 and ordered it to pay $3,000 to the Department of Government Services for public OHS education [Kelloway Construction Ltd., Govt. News Release, July 28, 2011].
