May 1: New Class of Rail Tank Car Announced

The Canadian and US governments announced a new class of rail tank car for flammable liquids, such as crude oil and ethanol. The new TC-117 standard, which includes enhanced safety features, will be applied first to cars carrying crude oil by all railway companies in Canada and the US. These regulations formalize the government’s commitment to phase-out the DOT-111 tank cars and require any new tank car used for flammable liquid dangerous goods service made on or after Oct. 1, 2015, to be built to the TC-117 standard.
