June 6: Deadline for Initial Asbestos Inspections by Employers

In June 2013, the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety was amended to impose new duties on employers regarding the safe management of asbestos. The regulation now requires employers to inspect buildings where their workers work—whether they own or lease the building. The initial inspection of flocking and heat insulating material must be completed by June 6, 2015, with subsequent inspections to be carried out every two years. The regulation also requires employers to take necessary measures to protect workers when doing work that’s likely to generate dust involving materials that do or may contain asbestos and to inform workers who could be exposed to asbestos of the relevant risks, prevention methods and safe working methods.
