Correctional officers at federal prisons across Canada have refused work over what they call an unsafe modification to pepper spray canisters, with recent rulings having been decided both in favour of the guards and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The most recent refusal of unsafe work linked to the canisters came in Nova Scotia at a medium-security prison. The guards’ concern is that a plastic seal on the canister hampers how quickly they can deploy the spray. But the CSC says the seals are a safety and quality assurance measure.
