April 1: Domestic Violence Victims Now Entitled to Time off from Work

Changes to the Employment Standards Code to let victims of domestic violence have paid and unpaid leave from work with guaranteed job security will take effect April 1, 2016. The Employment Standards Code Amendment Act (Leave for Victims of Domestic Violence, Leave for Serious Injury or Illness and Extension of Compassionate Care Leave) gives domestic violence victims up to five days of paid leave, five days of unpaid leave and 17 consecutive weeks of additional unpaid leave, which they can use for medical attention, victim services, counselling, relocation and/or legal assistance. (Watch this recorded webinar for more on these changes and domestic violence in the workplace in general.)
