May 1: Strike by Prison Workers over Safety Ends

Prison workers returned to work after the province and union reached a deal on May 1 in which the province agreed to an OHS review of the new Edmonton Remand Centre. On April 26, workers began a five-day wildcat strike, alleging that conditions inside the maximum-security facility were unsafe and put its members in danger. The union wouldn’t elaborate on what the risks were, claiming inmates in the jails could use that information against workers.
