March 10: Audit Report Criticizes Safety in Prison System

A report from the Auditor General of Canada on prison conditions in Nunavut found that the Baffin Correctional Centre, the territory’s only maximum-security facility, lacks appropriate space, including maximum-security space, and has poor conditions, which continue to put the safety and security of inmates and staff at risk. The audit also found issues in other facilities. For example, the report recommends the government ensure that facility management at the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility conducts emergency evacuation drills.
