Transport Canada approved new rules on the securing of trains in response to the Lac-Mégantic disaster. The rules impose stricter requirements for securing unattended trains, including setting a standard on the number of applied handbrakes and requiring additional physical securement measures to prevent runaway trains. In addition, a locomotive’s cabin must be locked and immobilized whenever a train is left unattended to prevent unauthorized entry. The new rules take effect Oct. 14, 2015.
