The BC Forest Safety Ombudsman’s report on a group of tree planters found in unsafe and substandard working conditions at a camp last July says that issues related to campsite notification, enforcement, contract qualification, training and the competitive tendering process all contributed to the situation. The report’s13 recommendations include:
- Review of the current notification requirements for camp operators
- Establishment of a contract qualification process for silviculture contractors
- Creation of a professional standards code for the membership of the Western Silvicultural Contractors’ Association
- Development of a practical shared delegated authority model for in-field inspections.
