According to labour groups, passengers on Winnipeg’s public transit lines are becoming increasingly hostile and taking their anger out on bus drivers, noting that assaults on bus drivers in the Manitoba capital have almost quadrupled since 2005. The union and the council are calling for a two-pronged strategy to protect workers: increased penalties at the federal level for those convicted of assaulting a transit operator and, on a more local level, increased security on buses and posting of photos of assailants.
