Employers have a duty to protect workers from not only injuries but also illnesses. Some illnesses, such as the seasonal flu, pose a risk in all workplaces. But others, such as avian influenza, are a risk only in certain industry sectors or types of operations. In the case of avian influenza or avian flu, the illness is primarily a risk to workers who work with or around poultry.

HOW TO USE THE TOOL

This model exposure control plan is based on one from WorkSafeBC. If your workers are at risk of contracting avian flu, adapt this for your workplace, OHS program and the requirements in your jurisdiction’s OHS regulations. Ensure that all affected workers and their supervisors are trained on this plan and understand their duties under it.
