An arbitrator criticized the management of University of Manitoba’s carpentry shop for allowing racism, homophobia and belittling behaviour toward workers, including the repeated use of a racial epithet toward a black worker. The arbitrator said the university breached its obligation to ensure a safe, healthy and respectful workplace and ordered it to write apologies and provide compensation of $1,000 each to several workers [The Canadian Press, Feb. 1, 2011].
