New regulations, which took effect July 6, provide clear standards about what must be done to clean up a contaminated site and outline when the government must be notified. Cleanup must be done by qualified professionals, such as registered engineers and geoscientists. There are two levels of remediation under the new program:
- Limited remediation allows property owners to remove contamination or leave it, under very controlled conditions that reduce risks to people and the environment.
- Full property remediation means property owners must remove all contamination.
