Yes, the second reading of Bill 160, Occupational Health and Safety Statute Law Amendment Act, 2011, continued on March 24 with no apparent end in sight. So far, there’s been over 6 ½ hours of debate. I won’t bore you with details of day six of the debate as nothing new was really said. Suffice it to say, some members think the bill goes a long way to fulfilling some of the Dean Report’s key recommendations; others believe it falls short. The focus of the criticism stayed on the prevention council and chief prevention officer.
Second reading was adjourned and will presumably continue next week. Hopefully, sometime soon, the Assembly will send Bill 160 to committee for any revisions, solicitation of public comments, etc. We’ll let you know when that happens.
