Jan. 20: Union Calls for More Criminal Prosecutions in Safety Cases

The United Steelworkers has launched a Stop the Killing, Enforce the Law campaign to increase enforcement of the Criminal Code when workers are killed on the job. Although an Ontario judge recently sentenced two corporate directors to 25-day jail sentences for OHS violations, they didn’t face criminal prosecution under the so-called C-45 or Westray provisions of the Code, which give prosecutors the ability to hold corporations and their officers criminally responsible when their disregard for health and safety results in a worker’s death or injury.
