Vehicle Parts Maker Fined $50,000 for Worker’s Hand Injury

At the facility of a vehicle parts maker, a worker trying to fix a broken press entered the press to determine the problem and correct it. When the press started working again, it closed on part of his hand, injuring him. An MOL investigation found that the worker hadn’t used a block to stop the press from moving. The company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the press had maintenance work performed on it only after it had been blocked to prevent its movement. The court fined it $50,000 [KSR International Co., Govt. News Release, Dec. 21, 2011].
